Closing Attribute Gaps Before a Migration

A platform migration exposes every missing attribute at once. Better to find them before the migration than during it.

The Situation

The new platform requires structured attributes the old one accepted as free text, and the extent of the gap is unknown.

Illustrative Scenario

Illustrative scenario. This describes how GearDock handles a common situation. It is not a customer case study, and no results are reported.

The Problem Migrations Create

Legacy storefronts are forgiving. Attributes live inside description paragraphs, required fields were made optional years ago, and nobody knows how many products are actually incomplete until an import check says so, usually under deadline.

Finding the Gap Before the Deadline

  1. Import the Existing Catalog

The current export becomes the baseline, including the free-text description fields.

  2. Detect Gaps Against the Target Shape

Missing, conflicting, and weakly supported attributes are reported per product, producing an accurate size for the problem instead of an estimate.

  3. Complete What Evidence Supports

Attributes that attached documents can support are proposed with their source. The rest remain an explicit list.

  4. Decide What Blocks Launch

Not every gap has to be closed. Deciding deliberately which attributes are launch-blocking is far better than discovering it from validator errors.

The Useful Output Is the List

The most valuable artifact here is an accurate, per-product inventory of what is missing. It converts an unbounded migration risk into a scoped, schedulable amount of work.

Is This Your Situation?

If this scenario is close to yours, running it on a slice of your own catalog will tell you more in an afternoon than any amount of further reading.
