In the second hand equipment trade these four words get used as a rough quality ladder: serviced is cheapest, refurbished is better, remanufactured sounds best of all. That reading is exactly backwards from the regulatory one, where the last word is not a compliment but a category with obligations attached. A listing that reaches for the strongest sounding word is making a claim about what was done to the device.
Where the Line Actually Sits
The threshold is not about how much labour went in, how many parts were replaced, or how good the result looks. It is about whether the finished device still performs to the specifications the original manufacturer set, for the use the original manufacturer intended. Extensive work that lands back on the original specification is not remanufacturing. Light work that moves the device off it can be.

- Servicing
- Repair and preventive or routine maintenance of one or more parts of a finished device after distribution, to return it to the safety and performance specifications established by the original manufacturer and to meet its original intended use.
- Reconditioning
- Not a term with a single settled regulatory definition. In trade use it means restoring a used unit to working, saleable order. Because it is loose, a listing that uses it should say plainly what was done rather than leave the reader to infer a standard.
- Refurbishing
- Restoring a used device to a condition of safety and effectiveness comparable to when it was new. It is a stronger statement than reconditioning and it invites the obvious question, which is what was checked in order to say it.
- Remanufacturing
- Processing, conditioning, renovating, repackaging, restoring or any other act done to a finished device that significantly changes its performance or safety specifications, or its intended use.
What This Means for the Listing You Write
A condition word in a listing is not a tone choice. It tells a buyer what standard the unit was returned to and, by implication, who stands behind that standard. So the honest structure of a used equipment listing separates two things that catalogs routinely merge.

- Never imply an OEM relationship, authorisation or endorsement you do not hold. This is the most common overclaim in the second hand trade and the easiest to spot.
- Do not describe the model using a neighbouring model's documentation. Sibling products in a range are the single largest source of confidently wrong specifications.
- State the standard you returned the unit to, in your own words, rather than borrowing a word whose meaning is set elsewhere.
- Keep the record of what you did. A condition claim you cannot evidence a year later is a claim you should not have published.
- If the work changed what the device does, say so plainly and get advice, because that is the case where the vocabulary question stops being an editorial one.
Why This Is a Data Problem Before It Is a Copy Problem
Most catalog software has one record per product and no place to put a fact about a single unit. So the condition note goes into the description field, the serial number goes into a custom attribute, and the work performed goes into a spreadsheet nobody links to the listing. Then a unit sells, the next one is listed against the same record, and the previous unit's condition statement is still sitting in the description.
